Kodak Set to Shift the Flexo Market Again!


Launching the FLEXCEL NX System ’16 to further drive on-press efficiencies.

Chris Payne, Kodak’s General Manager of Flexographic Packaging Solutions writes:

“I’ve had numerous discussions with our FLEXCEL NX customers from all parts of the world to understand for myself why they choose Kodak technology. We have an install base of over 450 FLEXCEL NX Systems globally and a plate business that’s growing at more than 20% per year so I know we are doing something right – but what is our technology REALLY doing for our customers’ businesses? The discussions were fascinating and I came away with three key learnings, all of which have helped shape the latest FLEXCEL NX System which we’ll be launching at drupa this year;

• Our customers truly value the on-press efficiencies that FLEXCEL NX Plates drive
• Our customers have gained a reputation for delivering the ‘gold standard’ for print quality
• Our customers’ businesses are growing and are in investment mode

On-press efficiencies emerged as the primary reason that printers keep using FLEXCEL NX Plates on a daily basis. It may not have been why they tried them in the first place but it’s what keeps them coming back. Not a complete surprise. We did design them that way. But extremely interesting and gratifying to hear the magnitude of the impact they are having. I heard about;

• increases in press yield and therefore available press time (15-20% increase in productivity for some customers);
• extended plate life (50% longer for some customers)
• ink savings and reductions in substrate waste (15% savings for some customers);
to mention just a few.

It’s clear that for flexo printers to stay competitive and at the leading-edge of their field a flexo plate today must not only be capable of addressing the quality demands from their brand clients but also maximize the capital investment they have made, or are about to make, in the pressroom – and it’s inspired us to take the entire FLEXCEL NX Platform to the next level with FLEXCEL NX System ’16.

Included with FLEXCEL NX System ’16, which I recently announced to the global trade media at a pre-drupa Press Conference, is a set of advanced software features and on-site services developed to further maximize on-press efficiencies with FLEXCEL NX Plates while maintaining the Kodak ‘gold standard’ for print quality and consistency. We build upon the award-winning NX Advantage feature set and introduce brand new NX Implementation Services to help printers get the best out of Kodak plates in the pressroom and an associated Kodak Certification Program that will enable them to publicly promote their capabilities. Automated, intelligent PDF preflighting is a simple process with Accura and Enfocus PitStop Server!

Accura order PDF attachments and the corresponding XML job ticket are automatically routed to Enfocus PitStop Server. The PDF file is then processed using Enfocus Smart Preflight technology, using information from the Accura XML job ticket to automatically verify the contents PDF file.

SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A.‎ – From April 29-30, 2014, the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) will host its highly acclaimed Folding Carton Boot Camp workshop at PPC’s headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts‎.

The Folding Carton Boot Camp is perfect for anyone new to cartons – even if not new to the industry, and non-plant personnel with limited experience outside a single plant operation. The course is intended to provide its graduates with a better understanding of the products and services their companies offer.

The two-day training follows the entire folding carton production process. First, instructors explain how fibre is recovered and paper is made. Then, industry experts describe the uses of various inks and coatings as well as the processes involved in prepress, including CAD, layout, and graphics. Next there is an overview of tooling, embossing, foil stamping, stripping, finishing, gluing, and windowing procedures. The curriculum concludes with an assessment of automated packaging equipment. At the close of the seminar, participants are awarded certificates of achievement.

Following the most recent Boot Camp, graduate Zach Codo from Accord Carton remarked, “The Boot Camp was excellent and I left with a great amount of valuable information. I especially enjoyed learning about unfamiliar manufacturing processes; it was an incredibly helpful learning experience.”

Ideal packaging solution with Kodak Flexcel NX!

Kodak packaging reseller Idealsolution welcomed a host of visitors to its part of the Kodak stand, with the output from the Flexcel NX digital flexo platemaker centre of attention.

Andy Molnar, managing director of Ideasolution says, “The Flexcel NX delivers the highest plate resolution of any flexo platemaker. This has enabled many of our customers to switch from six, seven or eight colour printing down to just the four process colours, with commensurate time and money savings.”

According to Molnar flexo printers and trade houses using the Flexcel don’t need to print a second black, or a second white because the resolution is so high. He says, “This is causing major interest in the flexo community, as it impacts on so many costs.”

DDS have released a new version of the Accura Print-MIS and AccuraOnline eCommerce solutions.

Accura 4.60 is a major upgrade to Accura 4.52 concentrating primarily on a powerful new HTML-based variable data email engine. Accura 4.60 also supports a major new version of AccuraOnline featuring simplified accounts management and online payment using PayPal. Accura 4.60 also includes minor features, changes and fixes to the previous Accura release as a result of feedback from customers.

Major New Features in v4.60 Include:


• COST RATE CALCULATOR: Establish what your true hourly cost rate is for each cost centre in your business using industry standard “cost-plus” principles. This new design, easy-to-use spreadsheet makes the task simple.

• CLIENT DEFAULT DISCOUNT: Link percentage-based discounts to clients. Discounts (or uplifts) are applied over and above the final mark-up profile price.

• CRM EMAIL BROADCAST TRACKING: Receive detailed reporting on email campaigns sent from the Accura CRM module via the GroupMetrics online tracking system.

ORIS Special Substrates
Not all substrates for eco-solvent printers are made equal. Most are low cost products designed for less demanding applications such as signage and posters. In an environment where colour accuracy and repeatability are essential, a high grade coating with a wide colour gamut is required. CGS has developed a wide range of ORIS specialty substrates, manufactured to the highest quality under extremely tight tolerances, guaranteed to bring you the best in packaging proofing. ORIS media even include an exclusive transfer film, serving as a mechanical primer for original stock, such as carton.

ORIS Special XG Inks
Unlike the standard inks, XG inks have been specifically formulated for proofing applications. The light inks (Lc, Lm) have been replaced with orange and green and the CMYK set has been completely redefined. As a result, the printable colour space is significantly larger, so that almost all Pantone colours can be reproduced accurately, a prerequisite for proofing high-quality packaging.

To ensure uniform drying and to prevent substrates sticking together, especially when printing small repeats, which are to be cut off immediately, CGS has developed an optional add-on dryer that easily fits to the output section of the VS printer.

Reverse or Surface Clear Film Proofing

Kodak Proofing Software Matchprint Inkjet can print in Reverse or Surface mode on clear film proofing media. Idealsolution recently ran tests comparing both print modes with white ink on on the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 white ink proofer. Using Kodak Matchprint Inkjet Clear Media 4 mil, spectrophotometer measurements were taken and a Kodak ColorFlow print comparison report was generated comparing the Reverse print mode to the Surface print mode. As indicated in the diagram below, Reverse print mode has greater ink density and a wider colour gamut than Surface print mode.

If you are after the best results for packaging mock-ups when printing with white ink on the WT7900 proofer using Kodak Matchprint Inkjet Clear Media 4 mil, it is recommended that proofs are produced using Reverse print mode.

ProPrint Review: Accura Print-MIS at Printworks Australia

When Printworks Australia decided to upgrade its systems four years ago, it was a major seachange. The company made the giant leap from Excel spreadsheets to a fully fledged MIS from UK developer Accura. General manager Ben Freeman says it was a big step up. The new MIS, the first of its kind in Australia, enables the company to track quotes and provide consistent quoting.

Since bringing the MIS on board, Printworks added a W2P layer in 2011 for its offset, digital and wide-format customers. “We were only a three-person business when it was first installed, and I was the only user, but the challenge has been teaching others to use it.” The company now has 12 staff.

ProPrint Review: Accura Print-MIS at Printworks Australia

Printworks Australia general manager Ben Freeman took a punt by installing the first of this brand in Australia and recently followed this by opting for the web-to-print module.

Ben states: “The Accura MIS handles our jobs from start to finish, from putting a client into the system to producing their quote and producing job specs, proof notes and delivery dockets and invoicing. The web-to-print module enables the client to get their own quotes, approved jobs, order jobs and find out where the job is in the system. They can do it from anywhere – they don’t have to be at their computer. I’ve got clients that do it from their iPads. The website has been developed to use on any platform. Out of my clients, I’ve got 40 active users that use it quite heavily.”

Accura 4.51 Build 2 is the second maintenance release to Accura 4.50 Build 15. Accura 4.50 Build 15 was the first public release since 4.21 Build 9 and represents almost two years of development. Australian Accura Print-MIS users know that they can contact Idealsolution via phone, email or remote log-in for their Accura support. Australian customers may not know that they can also establish a live text chat session with local support at Idealsolution directly from the Accura toolbar or help menu. That’s right – live text chat support is built directly into Accura!

Simply select the Live Chat icon in the toolbar or select the Live Chat option in the help menu.
